FC Schalke 04 announced on 9 July 2026 that veteran goalkeeper Kevin Müller has joined the club on a permanent deal. The 35‑year‑old, previously Heidenheim’s number 2, signs a contract running until 2027.

What exactly happened?

Müller left 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 after eleven years and 330 appearances – 67 in the Bundesliga and five in the Conference League. He already spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Schalke, playing four matches while Loris Karius was unavailable. The transfer fee, reported by "WAZ", consists of a mid‑five‑figure upfront payment with a possible bonus if Schalke avoids relegation – overall a low six‑figure sum.

Why does the move matter for Schalke?

After Karius extended his contract in early June, Schalke needed a reliable backup keeper. Müller brings immediate experience and leadership, already proven during his loan spell. Schalke director Youri Mulder said Müller "played an important role" in the second half of the season and is now a permanent squad member. This bolsters the competition for the starting spot and gives the coaching staff more depth.

How will the goalkeeper duo look?

Müller is expected to serve as the second choice behind Karius but can step in if form dips or injuries occur. Together with new signings Satoshi Tanaka and Junior Adamu, he completes the goalkeeper trio. In a brief interview Müller said he "can’t wait to train with the squad again" and aims to contribute in the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.

What does this mean for Heidenheim?

Heidenheim issued a club statement thanking Müller, calling him a "key figure" over more than a decade. Chairman Holger Sanwald highlighted Müller’s on‑field performances and his role as a leader. While his departure marks the end of an era, the agreed fee allows both clubs to continue pursuing their objectives.
